March 19, 2024 General Meeting

3/19/2024 Strawberry Hill General Meeting Notes

Meeting started at 7pm.  Over 20 people in attendance at the Merc Coop + more on Zoom.

First speaker was Wes McKain, speaking about the School Bond Election coming up on May 7th.  This is a $420 million dollar bond.  From their website:  This bond includes the construction of new schools, a state-of-the-art public library, an aquatic center, and comprehensive renovations to existing school campuses.  https://www.kckschools.org/bond2024

There is a lot more information on this website.  No opposing view was presented.

Second speaker was Mallory Super from the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department.  She informed us that the fire department will provide free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to property owners.  Also informed us about home fire drill, extinguishers & fire blanket, house numbers, permit to burn, blood drive on April 12, 9-3 at 815 N 6th St.  She proved two flyers which are attached below…reach out to Mallory at 913-573-5971 with questions.

Next speaker was Gunnar Hand, Director of Planning & Urban Design for the Unified Government.  Gunnar answered questions for about 45 minutes.  There was a LOT of information.  Following are some of the questions he was asked and answered:

What is status of new eco-devo director?  Gunnar said that is question for the new County Administrator, David Johnston (djohnston@wycokck.org)

Who can speak to economic aid available for homeowners (RHID, etc)  Gunnar recommended attending the Homeowners Resource fair on March 25 at 5pm at the Municipal Building https://www.wycokck.org/files/assets/public/v/2/county-administrators/strategic-communications/homeowner-resource-fair_march-2024-02.png

How can we get property owners to take care of their property? Gunnar said they currently have one code enforcement officer.

Who would I contact about traffic calming on 6th street and 4th & Armstrong?    Gunnar said there is a plan in the works:  6th Street Urban Trail & Complete Street project.  https://www.wycokck.org/Engage-With-Us/Calendar-of-Events/6th-Street-Urban-Trail-and-Complete-Street-RFP

Key takeaway from discussion with Gunnar is that the Planning department wants to work WITH us, not FOR us.  In order to successfully bring Strawberry Hill and the rest of KCK up to standards, the residents must participate.

There was so much more…wish you would have been there!  We will have him back and you can always reach out to him directly by emailing ghand@wycokck.org
